Victorian grain operator Bill Fay has been working in the trucking industry for many decades. Although it wasn’t a planned decision to enter this sector, Bill has come a long way since buying his first truck in 1983. Coming from a farming background, Bill says it was a combination of both coincidence and need that he entered into transport operations. Following humble beginnings, Bill’s grain transport business expanded its presence from Carranballac across regional Victoria. However, in recent years he has down-sized and his new company, Fay Grain, specialises in transport of grains, dairy and other niche goods for a range of clients across western regional Victoria.
Vantrans Container Transport

With nearly three decades of experience in wharf cartage, Vantrans Container Transport specialises in bulk movement of empty shipping containers between the Port of Melbourne and container depots in Melbourne’s west. The Footscray-based company has signed on some new clients this year and to help support this growth and improve efficiency, Vantrans recently purchased three double-configuration Freighter Super-B skeletal combinations from MaxiTRANS. “It’s a low-margin business and most of the time we work on very tight deadlines, which means efficiency is key,” Vantrans founder Jeremy van Hoff says. “Most days, we have over 60 vehicles moving between the port and the depots, therefore we wanted to maximise our vehicle productivity.”
Lawson Sideloader Services

Lawson Sideloader Services has enjoyed an unsurpassed period of growth over recent years. To help support this, the Melbourne-based Company ordered five Freighter trailers as it looks to expand its container handling operations currently triangulated between depots in Tottenham, Dandenong South and head office in Tullamarine. Lawsons Sideloader Services opted for the A-double as it can access a similar network to a B-double. It carries two 40 foot containers and while the Super-B does the same, access can be limited which will restrict transit in urban areas prone to permits. With this particular A-double, one permit covers any Victorian road within the PBS 2B cubic network. The 30m A-double’s manoeuvrability makes it compliant to run on the HPFV network when running at a higher mass, whilst also having the ability to access Level 2B cubic PBS routes in Victoria at 68.5T or less mass limit. This allows Lawson Sideloader Services to access additional routes that its current fleet of Super B-double combinations is not able to access, with the added benefit of still carrying two 40 foot containers. Although the A-double provides extra carrying capacity, it is the ease and flexibility it promises freight forwarding that determined the recent purchase, according to David. Plywood is heavy and can crumble, leaving a mess in the van, so as the years have passed, people have turned to corflute instead. Since it is more expensive, people look after it more and do not want it left behind, so MaxiTRANS engineers came up with a system to store the corflute under the trailer. It means it can be kept under lock and key when not in use. Many other operators store the corflute inside the refrigerated van, but that takes up space.
